Edwin Porter

Edwin Porter;
Edwin S. Porter was born on April 21, 1870. In Connellsville, Pennsylvania and was the creator of the first film projector. At a young age, Edwin was very interested in telegraphing and electricity, and as he jumped from many different jobs like theatre cashier, stagehand and a machinist specialist - Edwin would be influenced to develop a new electric range-finder.

In 1897 after joining the navy, Porter decided he wanted to invent his very own film projector. The idea for the Beadnil was to create a more vivid and steady image.

In his filming career, Porter was hired to work for Edison as a director and cameraman, which he would later film his first motion picture -Kansas Saloon Smashes.

In his later life, Porter tried tinkering with home-movie cameras, but he never seemed to follow his dream as just a few years later he died on April 3, 1941, from a stroke.
